This seems like a good review to kick off the After Dark page. I only know of one song by the group Be Your Own Pet outside of this album, a song called Becky. I must’ve found it through a Spotify discover weekly, and it became a good part of my liked songs. I get a notification that they had a new album out, the first one in a very long time, and I go to check it out on the bus to class. And of course, with tracks like ‘worship the whip,’ ‘pleasure seeker’ and ‘rubberist’ I quickly hid my phone from other peoples view… after queuing the whole album.
As you might be able to tell, MOMMY (all caps) is an album about hot, kinky sex and the stresses of adult life, fitting for a band with 15 years between albums. A majority of the tracks are 3 minutes or less, with driving bass and percussion and memorable choruses or lyrics. There the kinds of things that get stuck in your head, their melodies festering in your head, growing like a virus, a fever, before all you can do is rip off your clothes and scream to the world ‘hey, I’m into all kinds of things that would make you DROP DEAD!!!
The stand out tracks for me are Good Time, Pleasure Seeker, and Erotomania. Worship the whip and hand grenade, the albums most popular tracks, are also very good. This album is available wherever you find your music, plus on vinyl, CD and cassette through Bandcamp. One last note, the leading (space between lines) on their website is incredibly tight, almost overlapping. It feels suffocating, too close for comfort but also never close enough, it’s as close as you can make it before it becomes illegible. This could be my graphic arts brain making something of nothing, or maybe it’s representative of the band and their music.
